The Philippines was hailed the “Honeymoon Destination of the Year” in the 2011 China Travel and Meetings Industry Awards, affirming the confidence of Chinese industry executives in the Philippines as a destination for Chinese tourists, according to the Philippine Embassy in Beijing.

The Philippines bested Bali and Thailand in a voting process that garnered 4.2 million votes by members of the industry during almost two months of voting period in July and August 2010. A panel of judges initially chose the destinations per category and asked members of the industry to vote online.
The announcement of this award is auspicious, coming ahead of the State Visit of President Benigno Aquino III to China, which draws focus on the efforts of the Philippine and Chinese governments to facilitate and further strengthen the level of economic and people-to-people ties, including tourism.
Philippine Embassy in Beijing Charge d’ affaires, a.i. Alex G. Chua said that “the continued recognition and endorsement by the Chinese travel industry of the Philippines’ outstanding tourism assets further improves the country’s position in China’s 57.4-million outbound travel market.”
Last year, Boracay topped the list as Best Short Haul Tourism Destination by the same industry competition organized by Travel Weekly Publications. Boracay is already the most popular and established Philippine tourism product in China.
The Department of Tourism (DOT)’s Representative in Beijing, Ms. Jazmin Esguerra, is confident that the industry’s positive assessment of the Philippines will lead to greater popularity of Philippine tourism products in the market and the higher volume of Chinese tourism arrivals in the country.
China has recently become the 4th biggest source of tourists in the Philippines, posting an average annual growth of 20 per cent since 2005. The annual figure has increased from 39,581 in 2004 to 187,446 in 2010.
